How many days a month does a Turo car need to be booked to break even?

Short answer
Breakeven booked days = monthly fixed costs ÷ (host daily rate − variable cost per booked day). Host daily rate is your daily price times your host earnings share; variable cost per booked day is cleaning per trip divided by average trip length, plus a maintenance reserve for the miles guests drive. In the example below, a car with $460 of monthly fixed costs at a $48 daily rate needs about 19.6 booked days, or 65% utilization in a 30-day month, just to break even.
The inputs
- Monthly fixed costs: loan or lease payment, insurance, registration ÷ 12, telematics or keyless subscription, parking. These are owed whether the car is booked or not.
- Host earnings share: the part of the trip price you keep. It depends on your platform and protection plan; check your own earnings page rather than using someone else's number.
- Variable cost per booked day: (cleaning cost per trip ÷ average trip days) + (guest miles per day × maintenance reserve per mile), plus any fuel or charging you are not reimbursed for.
Worked example (example numbers)
| Item | Value |
|---|---|
| Daily rate (trip price) | $48 |
| Host share (example) | 75% → host daily rate $36.00 |
| Cleaning | $25 per trip ÷ 3.5-day average trip = $7.14 per booked day |
| Maintenance reserve | 90 miles per day × $0.06 = $5.40 per booked day |
| Contribution per booked day | $36.00 − $12.54 = $23.46 |
| Monthly fixed costs | $310 loan + $120 insurance + $15 registration + $15 telematics = $460 |
| Breakeven booked days | $460 ÷ $23.46 = 19.6 days (65% of a 30-day month) |
The other way round: breakeven daily rate
If you expect a certain utilization, solve for the price instead: breakeven daily rate = (fixed costs ÷ booked days + variable cost per booked day) ÷ host share. At 70% utilization (21 booked days) the example car needs ($460 ÷ 21 + $12.54) ÷ 0.75 = $45.93 a day to break even. Anything above that is profit.
What moves the number
- Longer trips spread the cleaning cost over more days, lowering variable cost per day. Trip-length discounts work against that, so check net per day by trip length.
- A paid-off car drops the loan payment from fixed costs, but you should still count depreciation if you want the true cost.
- Insurance and protection plan choice change both fixed costs and your host share.
Tools for this
A calculator or a ten-line spreadsheet will do this math. If you want it done per car with a what-if grid, one option is the OrangeCell Per-Car Profit Calculator ($14), which shows breakeven utilization and breakeven daily rate for up to six cars. For deciding whether to buy another car, the Vehicle ROI Analyzer ($17) adds payback months and cash-on-cash return.
Frequently asked questions
What is a good utilization rate for a car-sharing car?
Good means comfortably above that car's breakeven utilization, which depends on its fixed costs, price and your host share. A cheap paid-off car can profit at a utilization that would lose money on a financed premium car.
Should breakeven include my own time for cleaning?
If you want to know whether the car pays you for your work, yes: price cleaning time at an hourly value. If you only want cash breakeven, use supplies and outside costs only.
Does a higher daily rate always help?
Not always. A higher rate raises contribution per booked day but can lower utilization. Compare net per month at a few rate and utilization combinations rather than optimizing one number.
